Meet Sandra Fernandez
A Storytelling Partner for Houston, Pearland, and Beyond
Welcome. I’m Sandra Fernandez, founder and CEO of Story Zone Media, a public relations and storytelling agency serving Houston, Pearland, and the Brazoria County area. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and the work I do. My career has always been focused on helping organizations communicate clearly, connect deeply, and create lasting impact through the power of story.
My Background: Nearly Three Decades of Communication Experience
For close to 30 years, I have worked at the intersection of communications, public relations, and community engagement. My work has always been rooted in helping organizations—large and small—reach the audiences that matter to them most.
- City of Houston, Mayor’s Office: Early in my career. I worked closely with both English- and Spanish-language media to strengthen how the City connected with residents. During this time, I helped lead communications through critical moments, including the aftermath of 9/11 and several citywide weather emergencies, ensuring clear and timely information reached the community.
- Houston Public Library: As Public Relations Manager, I led marketing communications efforts for 43 branches, building campaigns that engaged one of the most diverse populations in the nation.
- Lopez Negrete Communications: I contributed to national and regional social media programs for major brands including Verizon and Comcast, focusing on strategies that effectively engaged the U.S. Hispanic market.
- Big Oak Tree Media: I co-founded and later sold my interest in this agency, proud to have built the foundation for what it has become today. During my tenure, we worked with clients such as Visit Houston, BakerRipley, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, as well as arts organizations, on projects ranging from influencer marketing and social media strategy to comprehensive media outreach—always with a focus on authentic engagement with multicultural audiences.
- Story Zone Media: Today, through my micro-agency Story Zone Media, I partner with nonprofits, service-based businesses, and community organizations across Houston, Pearland, and Brazoria County to clarify their message and create strategies that deliver measurable results.
Every project I take on is guided by one belief: when your story is clear and intentional, it moves people to act.
Why Storytelling Matters
Storytelling is at the core of what I do. It’s how we form connections, build relationships, and inspire change.
- It creates trust.
- It clarifies your message so people understand what makes you unique.
- It sparks action—whether that’s giving, buying, or supporting your cause.
At Story Zone Media, I help organizations use storytelling as a tool to strengthen relationships with the communities they serve. My approach combines strategy, cultural awareness, and bilingual communication, ensuring your message resonates across cultures and communities.
Deep Roots in Community Storytelling
My work is driven by a commitment to the communities where I live and work—Houston, Pearland, and the surrounding areas of Brazoria County.
- HispanicHouston.com – a blog I founded to celebrate Hispanic culture, share resources, and highlight events across Greater Houston.
- Spotlight Houston Podcast – a podcast I produce that tells the stories of the people, places, and events shaping our city.
- Community Leadership – I serve as Marketing Chair for the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (HWNT) Houston Chapter and NAWBO Houston, helping women leaders amplify their voices and reach wider audiences.
- Social Media Day Houston – I am one of the co-hosts of this annual event, which in 2025 returned as an in-person, day-long social media summit for the first time since 2019, bringing together professionals, creators, and businesses to learn, share, and connect.
These projects allow me to stay closely connected to the local stories that matter most.
