Meet Sandra Fernandez
A Communications Leader Rooted in Storytelling and Community
Welcome. I’m Sandra Fernandez, founder of Story Zone Media, a community-centered storytelling and communications platform rooted in Houston.
Story Zone Media began as a bilingual public relations and storytelling agency focused on helping nonprofits, service-based businesses, and community organizations communicate with clarity and purpose.
The agency specialized in:
- Public relations and media outreach
- Social media strategy and content creation
- Storytelling and brand messaging
- Podcast and video content
- Bilingual and multicultural communication
- Communication strategy for nonprofits and mission-driven organizations
Much of our work focused on helping organizations better connect with diverse and multicultural communities through thoughtful, culturally aware communication.
Over time, Story Zone Media evolved beyond client services into something broader: a platform centered on storytelling, education, communication, and community connection.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and the work behind Story Zone Media. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on helping people and organizations communicate clearly, build meaningful connections, and strengthen community through the power of storytelling.
Nearly 30 Years in Communications and Public Relations
For nearly 30 years, my work has lived at the intersection of communications, public relations, media relations, and community engagement.
- City of Houston Mayor’s Office: Early in my career, I worked closely with both English- and Spanish-language media to help strengthen communication between the City and the community during critical moments, including the aftermath of 9/11 and major weather emergencies.
- Houston Public Library: As Public Relations Manager for Houston Public Library, I led communications efforts for 43 branches serving one of the most diverse populations in the country.
- Lopez Negrete Communications: My background also includes multicultural marketing and communications work through Lopez Negrete Communications, where I contributed to campaigns engaging Hispanic audiences for national brands including Verizon and Comcast.
- Big Oak Tree Media: I later co-founded Big Oak Tree Media, helping develop campaigns and communication strategies for organizations including Visit Houston, BakerRipley, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, arts organizations, nonprofits, and community-focused initiatives.
The Evolution of Story Zone Media
Today, I serve in a communications leadership role within the healthcare sector while continuing to grow Story Zone Media as a platform for storytelling, educational initiatives, media projects, and community conversation.
That includes initiatives like:
- Hispanic Houston — a community storytelling blog focused on Houston’s Hispanic community, culture, and conversations
- Spotlight Houston — a podcast highlighting the people, organizations, and ideas shaping our city
- Social Media Day Houston — an annual June 30 conference focused on communication, social media, and professional development
- Educational workshops and speaking engagements centered on storytelling, public relations, communication strategy, and community engagement
These projects reflect the heart of what Story Zone Media has become: a place where communication, culture, and community intersect.
Why Storytelling Matters
Storytelling has always been at the center of my work—not simply as a communication tool, but as a way to amplify voices, preserve culture, encourage dialogue, and create connection.
I believe:
- Communication should be clear, accessible, and intentional
- Stories are strongest when they reflect diverse lived experiences
- Community conversations create understanding and connection
- Storytelling has the power to strengthen community
Whether through workshops, podcasts, blogs, speaking engagements, conferences, or future media initiatives, my goal remains the same: to create spaces that inform, connect, and amplify meaningful voices.
Let’s Stay Connected
Thank you for being here and for taking the time to learn more about Story Zone Media and the work I care deeply about.
Whether you connect through Hispanic Houston, Spotlight Houston, Social Media Day Houston, future workshops, or simply through a shared love of storytelling and community conversation, I’m glad you’re here.
Let’s continue the conversation.
